Principal Accountabilities
• Anchor steel supports from ceiling joists to hold pipes in place.
• Assemble pipe sections, tubing, or fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, or welding equipment.
• Attach pipes to walls, structures, or fixtures, such as radiators or tanks, using brackets, clamps, tools, or welding equipment.
• Cut openings in structures to accommodate pipes or pipe fittings, using hand or power tools.
• Cut, thread, or hammer pipes to specifications, using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe threaders, or pipe benders.
• Direct helpers engaged in pipe cutting, preassembly, or installation of plumbing systems or components.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
• Must be able to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places.
• Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• Must be able to frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. The pipefitters are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The pipefitters are frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. They are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
